Creating Awareness & Responsibility for the Environment

Implementation of Solid Waste Management

Accumulation of generated waste that is not properly managed may bring about negative impact such as pollution and deterioration of land resources.  This is generally hazardous to the health of the community residing with and adjacent to the area where the wastes are accumulated. To mitigate such scenarios, RSRH Livestock Corporation implements a Solid Waste Management Plan within its premises.

All staff including operators and helpers are obliged to observe waste segregation at source specifically biodegradable and non-biodegradable items within the cattle slaughterhouse facility. Recycling and reusing is also adopted wherein recyclable items are sold to junk shop. All non-hazardous dry and office wastes are placed in garbage bags and stored at the garbage storage area for collection of the municipal garbage collectors. Hazardous solid and liquid wastes are stored in appropriate waste containers, sealed, and stored in identified hazardous waste storage area. Proper management will be exercised ensuring necessary storage procedures are carefully implemented.

Implementation of Hazardous Waste Management

Hand-in-hand with the generation of general solid waste, cattle slaughterhouses also produce hazardous waste.  This includes empty contaminated containers, busted fluorescent bulbs, electronic/electrical waste, LED lighting fixtures, oil contaminated materials, used oil, and lead acid batteries. Accordingly, it is essential for cattle slaughterhouse facilities to apply for a Hazardous Waste Generator Registration ID with Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau-Region 3.

Consequently, Transport Permit (TP) shall be secured by the registered hazardous waste transporter and eventually treated by the EMB accredited TSD facility. The TP shall be renewed every six months. Proper in-house collection is a must and a designated area for temporary storage should be made to ensure safety to staff, clients, and adjacent communities.

It is also important that an accredited transporter/treater be contracted out by the management to ensure that the DENR regulation is properly adhered to. Collection of hazardous waste may depend upon the agreement of the parties. It is necessary that the storage area capacity is able to store the hazardous waste generated while waiting for collection. The manufacturing facility’s responsibility includes ensuring that the hazardous waste generated are properly hauled, treated, and disposed at sanitary landfill. Documentations of this matter should always be made available to any DENR personnel upon site-inspection.

Awareness Seminars, Audio-Visual Presentation, and Environmental Flyers

RSRH is giving an in-house awareness seminars and audio-visual presentation about environmental issues, conducted personally by RSRH President & CEO and Pollution Control Officer, Mr. Raymond Hernandez. Imparting basic education and awareness on the following environmental laws;

RA 6969 – Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Control Act of 1990

RA 8749 – Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999

RA 9003 – Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000

RA 9275 – Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004

Likewise, RSRH believes that awareness plus responsibility is equal to personal power for all concerned. Moreover, placing environmental flyers in strategic location inside the facility as visual aid would be a beneficial reminder for all.

Small good things initiated with care and love for our mother earth can create giant stride for our future generation.
